Hearing-aids

In simple terms, hearing-aids make sounds louder so you are able to hear more comfortably.

They are always battery operated and you wear them in or around your ear. They are available in many shapes, sizes and types, but all have certain things in common. They have a microphone that picks up sound, sound is then processed electronically in the hearing-aid. This resulting signal is then passed into a receiver which converts it back into louder sound.

It is a myth that a hearing-aid can give you perfect hearing, however wearing the right hearing-aid can change and enhance the quality of your life. It can help you hear everyday sounds better, and help with hearing conversations. This hopefully will improve your confidence in talking to people. If you have a hearing loss in both ears, you may need two hearing-aids. Two hearing-aids can help finding the direction that a sound has come from.

Different types of hearing-aids

Here are a few examples of different types of hearing-aids.All images have been taken from the Widex ® website.

bteBehind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing-aids

A behind-the-ear hearing-aid has an earmould, inside your ear with the rest of the hearing-aid behind your ear. These come in many different forms, some have two microphones that enable you to hear better in background sounds. Behind-the-ear hearing-aids are able to fit more severe and profound losses.

riteReceiver-In-The-Ear (RITE) hearing-aids.

This is a small hearing-aid where the microphone is behind the ear, but the receiver sits in the ear-canal. This can be very effective for people who want an open fitting hearing-aid, which will let natural sound as well amplified sounds in the ear.

iteIn-The-Ear (ITE) hearing-aids.

These hearing-aids fit entirely in your ear. The working parts of the hearing-aid are all in the moulded part of the hearing-aid. The advantage is that you only have one part to the hearing-aid.They tend to need more repairs then behind-the-ear hearing-aids.

cicCompletely In-the-Canal (CIC) hearing-aids.

These are very small ITE hearing-aids, that tend to fit deeper in the ear canal. They may not be suitable for people with a severe hearing loss.

What type of hearing-aid would suit me?

There are so many different types of hearing-aids available, mostly digital, without assessing your hearing and needs, it is impossible to say. Digital hearing-aids have a tiny computer inside that processes the sound. It is therefore possible to customise the hearing-aid to suit your hearing loss. Digital hearing-aids can have different programs for different sound environments. There could one program for a quiet living room and one program for a noisy office. You can have a remote control which allows you to alter the hearing-aid without touching your ear.

Advantages of digital hearing-aids

  • The sound is more precisely tailored to suit your hearing.
  • It is easier to have more comfortable listening in different environments.
  • Hearing is improved in noisy situations.
  • Feedback (whistling) is reduced.

If you decide that you want to try a digital hearing-aid please contact me for an initial consultation. Please don’t hesitate to bring along a relative or friend at this first visit. As well as support they may have questions that you forget to ask.

Hearing Aid Repairs

I am able to help with minor repairs and can arrange repairs to any make of hearing-aids. Costs vary depending on make and age of hearing-aid.

The life of a hearing-aid seems to be about seven years, but this can vary depending on manufacturer. The cost of repair includes my services but will not include a charge for registered post, which is a preferred option.

Most hearing-aids repairs include a repair warranty of six months.

Swim-plugs and Ear-moulds

swim_plugI am able to take impressions for any type of earmould, including earmoulds made from non-allergic material. Costs of these will vary, and prices will be given when you contact me.

Swim plugs are also available.  These are custom made solid, soft, silicone shells, which fit tightly in the ear, and  help prevent water entering the ear canal. These seem quite popular with swimmers of any age. They can be made in many colours, including clear.

Prices are available on request, a small discount is given when ordering a pair.

Home Visits all over Kent

I visit clients all over Kent. I do not mind where in Kent you live, as I have built my client base in most regions. Sometimes I may charge a small fee to help with my petrol costs, but this will depend on various factors, and you will need to contact me to discuss this.
